BELFAST — Students at Waldo County Technical Center got a taste of the real world on December 19 when the school’s Maine Educational Loan Marketing Corporation (MELMAC) committee hosted its first annual Adulting Extravaganza.

In the school’s Auto Technology shop, teens had the opportunity to change a car’s flat tire and check fluids under the hood. Each student who participated received a tire gauge.

At the other end of WCTC, students experienced what it is like to pay bills and budget money in the adult world. The student center was set up with tables representing common monthly bills such as heat, rent, internet and food. These tables were manned by teachers who acted as bill collectors.

Participants were each given an envelope containing the title of a job that could be procured by a tech center graduate, a month’s net salary, and a list of bills. The challenge was to pay all their bills with their allotment of cash. Those who did not make enough, learned quickly the importance of prioritizing their expenses.

When asked what they learned during this process, students noted that they now appreciated the value of budgeting and the importance of obtaining a job that provides enough money to cover expenses, according to a news release.

Teens also shared that, for many, this was their first time using a jack and changing a tire.  

The Adulting Extravagaza is part of Waldo County Technical Center’s ongoing focus to prepare students for career and college readiness, which includes opportunities to earn trade specific certifications, workshops on filing taxes, resume preparation, financial literacy and interview skills.
