24th annual Mussel Ridge Hoops Tournament set for March 16-17

Wed, 03/06/2019 - 7:45pm

ST. GEORGE — The St. George Parks & Recreation Department and its boosters will be harboring the 24th annual Mussel Ridge Hoops Tournament at the St. George School on Juniper St. in Tenants Harbor on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17.

The double elimination tournament offers at least a dozen exciting basketball games, lots of delicious hot and cold foods (with many homemade specialties & goodies), tons of snacks, a souvenir program complete with team rosters, local information, puzzles, games, etc. and, most importantly, a gym full of players having fun buoyed by positive and supportive fans.

Featured in this year’s tournament are fourth (and a few second and third) grade boys and girls from St. George, Thomaston, Cushing, Camden, Rockport, Spruce Head, Rockland, and Owls Head and South Thomaston.

This year’s tournament will look slightly different with a Saturday start due to fewer available girls teams. The girls will play a round robin format with championship game on Sunday. The boys will continue to be a double elimination bracket.

The games begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the St. George boys hosting the Camden boys, while the Cushing boys entertain the Thomaston boys at 10:30 a.m. The girls tournament begins with the St. George girls facing the Camden girls at noon. Games will sail on every hour and a half with our final game of the day beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday’s championship games start with the girls at noon and the boys at 1:30 p.m. As with any double elimination tournament, there is the possibility of another girls championship game at 3 p.m. and/or another boys championship game at 3:30 or 4:00 p.m.

Admission is $4 for adults on Saturday. On Sunday, the admission is $2 due to the reduced schedule. Admission prices are for an all-day pass. Attendees will receive a free commemorative program with their first admission.

An autographed basketball from Boston Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum will be raffled off during the tournament.
