The Cushing peninsula has a long and rich artistic tradition where artists, many recognized around the world, work in unassuming studios producing art which reflects the beauty of the surrounding land and sea.
On the weekend of August 3 - 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., five Cushing artists will open their studios providing visitors a unique opportunity to meet the artists, view and discuss their work, explore their private work spaces and purchase their art.
This year’s Open Studio Weekend will share the studios of sculptor Vic Goldsmith, fiber artist Katherine Cobey, photographers John Paul and Arduina Caponigro and painters David Vickery and David Sears.
Vic Goldsmith, has exhibited locally over the last 15 years. He will exhibit sculptures which demonstrate a close attention to the marriage of line, space and volume. Since 2002, he has direct carved wood, developing improvisational shapes which combine organic and geometric themes. His exhibit will include photography which helps describe his inspiration, as well as drawings and older sculpture. His studio is located just before 34 Pleasant Point Road in Cushing, approximately 500’ from the intersection with River Road and across from Town House Road.
David Vickery paints in a style best described as Contemporary Realism, in oil on panel carefully built up in layers, interpreting subjects close to home and on Monhegan. A selection of new and older paintings will be on display and available for purchase. Web site:

David Sears, known for his paintings of beach stones and nautical charts currently works with wood, metal and paint
to document endangered birds and fish associated with the Gulf of Maine. Carvings, original paintings, watercolors and prints will be on display and available for purchase. Sears’ studio is located on Hyler Cove Lane, off River Road and just before just before the Langlais Sculpture Preserve in North Cushing. Signs will be posted.
Jody Payne received her BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, where she studied with Robert Stackhouse and attended summer painting workshops in Tenants Harbor and on High Island, Maine. "There is a terrific immediacy and freshness to (Payne's) take on the Maine landscape, " says Suzette McAvoy, executive director/chief curator, Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Describing her process Payne says, "It's like when you're walking out in water and you are deep enough that your feet lift off the bottom, there is a moment when you realize you are not fully in control, but to fully explore this new experience you have to let yourself get lost within it." Painting in oil on canvas and paper, her work "question (s) the gap between abstraction and reality…Payne commits to her art career the way she commits to a painting", writes Alison Williams in Art New England's emerging artists issue March/April 2018. Have an adventure in art. Be among the first to see new works from artist John Paul Caponigro’s series Constellation.
Caponigro is inspired by the great astronomer Carl Sagan who said “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star stuff.” and “We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.” Caponigro combines images of the night sky (many of deep space made by the Hubble telescope) with landscapes found around the world. They marry the heavens and the earth, showing the lands that envelope us with the stars that lie behind, around, and within us. When we gaze at the heavens we see where we came from and what we were, where we are going and what we will be. When we gaze at the land we see where and what we are now. In contemplating both we embrace an expanded view of our place in the universe and ourselves. To find our place within the universe we must find the universe within us.

Arduina Caponigro’s dreamlike images recreate moments of beauty and wonder that break through our every day to offer insight and inspire inquiry. In her current and ongoing work “Itineraries In Invisible Ink” she explores the many unexpected directions this magical life can take us in. With images found as near as her own back yard in Cushing and as far as the largest ice fiord in Greenland, she shares her joyful combination of gratitude and curiosity wherever she goes.
