ROCKLAND — The Strand Theatre will present the new film series “100 Years of Movies” as part of a year long celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2023. Films from every decade the theater has been in operation will be screened, presented with monthly themes.

The films were selected to represent the filmmaking style and perspectives of their time; in addition to well-known works, the titles will include lesser-known, high quality releases that have been overlooked as well as films from underrepresented directors. Each film will be introduced by a local film historian. 

January’s theme, “Showbiz Satires,” opens with Show People (1928) on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. The film follows starry-eyed country girl Peggy Pepper (Marion Davies), who dreams of being a movie star. After a rough start, Pepper catches a break when she meets small-time studio liaison Billy Boone (William Haines), who lands her a job acting in a cheap slapstick comedy. Pepper quickly makes a name for herself and is signed for more high-profile projects, much to the dismay of Boone, who is falling for her. Directed by King Vidor, Show People is a silent film accompanied by a musical soundtrack. It has a running time of 1 hour 23 minutes.

The second “Showbiz Satire” film will be Sullivan’s Travels (1941), screening on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m.

January’s films will be introduced by the Strand’s very own film historian, House Manager Liz McLeod.

Tickets are $8/General Admission, $7/Strand Members, and will be available at the box office 30 minutes prior to show time.
