Water as Medicine—Wellness Wednesdays with Dr. Alison Maloof, ND

Water has had a long history of use in medicine over thousands of years.

Hydrotherapy— “Water Cure”

Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water, which was first officially used by naturopathic doctors in the 1800’s by Father Sebastian Kneipp.  Hydrotherapy harnesses the healing power of water to create balance and support health in the body. There are many different types of treatments options and the most common ones used by naturopathic doctors for hundreds of years are constitutional hydrotherapy and balneotherapy (more about this one below).

Constitutional Hydrotherapy

This therapy consists of a specific application of alternating hot and cold water to the chest, abdomen and back, while being wrapped in a wool blanket. Constitutional hydrotherapy gently enhances circulatory, digestive, immune and nervous systems. This treatment can be used for a wide variety of conditions or illnesses, such as tick-borne disease, thyroid conditions, stress reduction, anxiety, depression and GI conditions.

What are the benefits of Constitutional hydrotherapy?

This special application of water alters the blood and lymph flow in the body, which increases circulation and detoxification pathways, as well as modulate immune system and digestive system functioning. Additionally, this treatment stimulates the parasympathic nervous system—aka “rest and digest”, which allows for stress reduction.

Balneotherapy & Benefits

This is the use of a special type of peat-mud often used in a bath or topical applications. This mud is high in minerals, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, and plant compounds that can be absorbed through the skin. The mud is also alkaline in nature. Topically applied to the abdomen helps support digestion and detoxification. When added to a bath is supports circulation, certain skin conditions, hormone balancing and more.

Where can I get hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is offered by some Naturopathic Doctors throughout the United States.  Locally, Atlas Naturopathic Health Center currently offers constitutional hydrotherapy and topical balneotherapy to established patients and to patients with a referral.
