The holiday season is a time where many of us decide to buy items that we need or want.  It’s a chance to treat ourselves and a chance to purchase thoughtfully.  Many independent businesses and makers depend on this season to survive.  It’s no fun to worry about rent, food and heat while trying to make your business successful.  If you are lucky enough to have a fulfilling and decent paying job please consider purchasing from independent makers and artist.

It’s easy and sustainable to give the gift of experience.  Tickets to a concert, play or recital provides recognition and income to actors and musicians.  Purchasing a painting, photo or print for your wall or a loved one keeps an artist in paint and bread.  A gift certificate is a lovely treat for both diner and restaurant.  Book a session with a photographer for a special memory.  I know we can all take photos ourselves but a professional can get everybody looking good and add depth and nuances that escape our eyes.

Don’t forget the brick and mortar shops on Main Street.  Often these shops are filled with goods made by your neighbors.

Makers and artist need support or they won’t survive.  And we need ART.  “Art speaks where words are unable to explain.”  Threadless Artist Mathiole
