The first Saturday in September falls on Labor Day Weekend.  Folks can lighten their labor by making plans to attend the monthly public supper at the John Street United Methodist Church, 98 John Street, Camden. “John Streeters” are already laboring for the supper by lining up members to provide home made specialties for yet another public supper Saturday, September 2 at 5:30 pm.  Diners are welcome to come to 98 John Street in Camden to enjoy a hearty meal and wonderful conversation at the family-style tables.

The church offers a single sitting, so diners usually arrive early to be sure they will be able to get a seat.   Starting with this supper, guests who wish to reserve space for their group may arrive early to purchase tickets for the entire number in their party and may save seats at the single table set aside for all reserved parties.  Once that table is filled, no further reservations will be made and tickets will be sold only to people present.

The meal is appealing to all ages, as we learned recently when a parent mentioned that he had forgotten about the supper, but his daughter had read about it in the paper and urged the family to attend.

Upon arrival, folks are encouraged to select a slice of pie on the way to their table, and more than a few slices are consumed before the main course – rhubarb, lemon, apple, pumpkin, blueberry, strawberry and chocolate, to name a few.

All other food items are brought to the tables by servers: hot casseroles, chilled salads and warm rolls along with freshly baked beans, with refills generally available.

Diners get a great meal before moving along to other Saturday evening activities, and all for the price of $9 adults, $5 children under 13.
