CAMDEN, MAINE – October 18, 2018 – Five Rotary Clubs (Belfast, Camden, Camden Satellite, Midcoast Interact, Rockland, and West Bay) are banding together to raise funds and awareness to eradicate polio. The walk will start at the Rockland Public Landing (One Harbor Park, Rockland), at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 20. Following the walk, there will be a family-friendly gathering at the Community Recreation Center (61 Limerock Street, Rockland). 

Polio destroys nerve cells in the brain, causing muscle wasting and paralysis. The number of diagnosed cases of polio have decreased by 99.9% thanks to organizations, including Rotary International, that have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries.  

Members of the community are invited to participate in the walk’s festivities and make donations to help eradicate the disease. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. The Gates Foundation will match $2 for every dollar raised by the local clubs.
