Want to hear something really, really cool?

On Saturday mornings, at 11:00, parents and kids are working out together at CJ Strength and Conditioning in Rockport.  Our connection to each other often becomes a casualty of our busy lifestyles; but down at the gym, there’s a bunch of people having fun with their kids.

Family Fitness Saturdays is a great new program at CJ Strength.  Says Gab Duke, “When Jack (Hauprich) approached me with the idea of having a kids’ class I was really excited. I work with kids every day of the week teaching them skills and activities to make them healthy, active, lifelong learners and thought this was another way I could do that. I teach a fitness unit in my school for grades 3-5, so I had an idea of what I wanted to do and what young people would be able to handle. Using that knowledge, along with help from (CJ Strength Coach) Amie Hutchison, we put together a great plan for classes.”

Gab is the Physical Education Teacher at Rockland’s South School Elementary.  She is a graduate of Husson University in Bangor (where she played basketball for four years), and has been a lifelong resident of Rockport.  “I always say I have the best job in the world,” she beams.

Once her college athlete days came to an end, Gab wanted to find something else to keep her body moving.  “That’s when I got interested in lifting weights and working out for myself, not just for whatever sport I was playing.”  This serves her well in the Saturday program, which has been wildly successful.

The Family Fitness classes are set up starting with a warm-up, then the group learns one or two new skills (such as step-ups, jump rope, squats, lunges and push-ups). After practicing these new skills, then it’s time to play a game to get the cardio in (it tends to be a favorite)! After the game, there’s time to grab a drink and cool down before students finish up with a workout and some stretching.  Both Coach Amie and Gab are at each class, and together they are able to focus one-on-one with every child as they need, to help them be successful and achieve!
