Story Location:
UMA Rockland, 91 Camden Street, 4th Floor

UMA Faculty member, Sarah Hentges, will present on Thursday, October 3 from noon - 1:00PM at UMA Rockland about her book, Girls on Fire: Transformative Heroines in Young Adult Dystopian Literature. In this free presentation, Hentges will introduce us to the real and symbolic power of the Girl on Fire and the ways in which our contemporary dystopia is challenged through literature, art, and activism.

Dystopia is a genre that explores social and political structures and often provides some of literature's most blatant cultural critiques.

According to Hentges, the Girl on Fire is an intersectional character. She is an actor and activist in her world. She is complicated. She is a leader in her community. The Girl on Fire challenges injustice and limited representations. She fights for herself and for those who are oppressed, voiceless, or powerless. She is the hope for our shared future.

This presentation is part of a series of Lunch & Learns at UMA Rockland. Although there is no fee, pre-registration is encouraged by calling UMA Rockland at 596-6906.
