Dr. Winkes: Outdoor Safety

Whether it’s hunting or taking a fall hike, spending time out in nature brings us joy and keeps us healthy!

I am so grateful to live in Midcoast, Maine, where it is easy to get that time outside! Mountains, woods, lakes and the ocean are all within easy reach - there’s something outdoors for everyone to enjoy.

My family, and most of the people I know take regular advantage of our great geography and are grateful for the opportunities. Except for the eclipse weekend (!), we’re not spending our time in traffic jams like some of our friends in suburbia, we’re spending it outdoors!

Of course, there are some risks involved, particularly when folks are out alone, or if the weather changes suddenly. It’s important to teach your kids to be prepared and take extra precautions during hunting season in Maine- including wearing hunter orange.

I recently came across an outdoor safety guide that’s very thorough but also very well-written. I’m going to make myself a small portable safety/survival kit this weekend and keep it in my truck for my own fall and winter adventures. I’ll talk to my teens about borrowing mine or making their own, as they start to have more independent experiences outdoors (though my first advice is always to take a buddy - especially Mom or Dad - with them whenever possible).

Maybe your family would find this guide useful as well?

And enjoy that time outdoors!
