** WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13 - SPAGHETTI DINNER (DRIVE THRU) - 4:30pm - 7pm **

The last couple of years have brought challenges most of us never dreamed of, requiring that people become creative to achieve the impact that once seemed very straightforward. The Joy to be Bald team will not let this stop the annual event, which will move forward in parts again this year, to accommodate the challenges presented to us all.

This year’s benefit recipients are three beautiful young women, who all have different types of cancer: Kaylee York with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Ashley Messner with Stage IV Colon Cancer – now metastasized, and Darcy Giacomuzzi with breast cancer. All of these ladies and their families have huge hurdles to face and need the support of their community.

The first event of the 12th Annual Joy to be Bald Fundraiser kicks off Saturday, October 9, from 10:00am to 1:00pm with a Bake Sale, which will take place at Lori’s Café, 504 Belfast-Augusta Road, Liberty. This will be an outdoor event, featuring locally made pies, breads, whoopie pies and much more. People may preorder pies by contacting Lori’s Café at 589-4141.

The second event will take place Sunday, October 10, beginning with Head Shaving at Noon, followed by a Walk-A-Thon from Walker School, 33 West Main Street in Liberty to the Liberty Fire Department.

The final event will be Wednesday, October 13, from 4:30pm – 7:00pm with a Spaghetti Dinner, which will be drive through to pick up at Lori’s Café as well. Assistance with coordination of the Walk-A-Thon and the dinner again this year is being generously provided by the Liberty Fire Department. People can also preorder for the Spaghetti Dinner by calling Lori’s Café at 589-4141.

What began in 2010 as a dare between Café owner, Lori Mayer, and a patron who offered to donate money to a mutual friend if Mayer agreed to shave her head; has grown into an annual event to offer financial assistance to local people battling cancer. The event still bears the name of the original recipient and dear friend, Joy Mehuren, who succumbed to Lung Cancer in 2011.
