UNITY — Sept. 21 marked the last day of this year’s Common Ground Country Fair in the western Waldo County town of Unity, and for those who braved the clouds and drizzle during the first half of the day, the reward was bright sunshine and warm temperatures by 2 p.m.

Sunday morning delivered the draft horse show while the aafternoon’s events included the oxen log scooting contest, sheepdog demonstrations and myriad animal care workshops, including hoof care, clipping, dentistry, equine acupressure and more.

In the exhibition hall, farmers and residents not only compete for the biggest and/or best pumpkins, beets and canned vegetables, jellies and honey, there are competitions for amateur artists and craftspeople to enter afghans, bedspreads, quilts, clothing, sweaters, rugs, wall hangings, basketry, candles, dried flower arrangements, hand made soaps, pottery, photographs, paintings, woodcuts and silkscreens.

The exhibition hall was also a good place to duck in and get out of the brief periods of rain in the morning, and there was so much to see and marvel at, it was an integral part of the fair to see, rain or shine.

Wrapping up Sunday’s full day of workshops, demonstrations, talks and walks were talks on raising backyard chickens, goat hoof care, banning dogs, bait and traps for bear hunting, estate planning, organic farming to feed the world, what forests and prairies can teach us and healing Lyme disease; an equine shiatsu demonstration, sustainable home heating options, a bow-making demonstration, foraging and wild plant walk and a friction fire class.
