    HOPE — Deven D. Drossel, 48, of Hope, died April 19, 2013, in Lincolnville. Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., he was the son of Erwin E. and Deloris (Morgan) Drossel. After high school graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. His employment included at Maine General Hospital in Augusta, where he had worked as a security guard, and at Windward Gardens in Camden, where is worked as a cook. For the past three years, Deven had resided in Hope.

    UNION — Joan Orne Butler, 80, wife of Wayne Butler, died unexpectedly April 20, 2013, at her home with her family at her side.

    Born in Thomaston Feb. 13, 1933, she was the daughter of Alfred and Bertha Carter Orne. She was educated in Cushing schools.

    On Oct. 3, 1959, she married Wayne Butler in Rockland. Together they made their home in Appleton for more than 30 years before moving to Mr. Butler's family farm in Union, where they resided for more than 20 years.

    BANGOR — Mary Josephine Burns, 86, longtime Rockland resident, passed away April 19, 2013. She was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Old Town to Frederick A. and June Scott Burns of Old Town.

    Mary graduated from Old Town High School and enjoyed reading, Bingo, collecting and cats.

    She is predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Gladys McCullen and Margaret Sinclair; her nephew, Frederick P. Knight; and her loving companion, Charles M. Currier.

    ROCKLAND — Grace Whiffen died peacefully April 20, 2013, after battling diabetes for more than 50 years. Grace was born in Rockland Oct. 14, 1934, the daughter of Carmella and Mike LaGrassa. Living in "Little Italy" in the North End of Rockland and being the daughter of immigrants, she was very proud of her Italian heritage. Her mother died when she was 2-years-old and Grace was brought up by her aunt, "Grammie" and her father Mike.

    ROCKLAND — Kenneth E. "Smitty" Smith, 86, died April 5, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport, after an extended illness.

    Born in Rockland Sept. 4, 1926, he was one of seven children of William H. and Susie Kyzer Smith. He attended local schools, and later in life, earned his diploma Jan. 24, 1961,from the American School in Chicago, Ill.

    In January 1945 he entered the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged in August 1946.

    George was born June 12, 1926, in Seal Harbor. He was the beloved son of Arthur Foss and Gladys Higgins Whittier. He grew up on "the Island" in Brewer and eventually settled in Rockland, where he met his wife and made many lifelong friendships.

He attended Cape Elizabeth High School and was a 1965 graduate of Maine Classical Institute in Pittsfield. In 1969 Jeffory graduated from Nasson College in Springvale.
