    Ernest W. Marshall Jr., obituary

    ROCKLAND — Dr. Ernest W. Marshall Jr., 92, died June 15, 2017, at Woodlands Memory Center in Rockland, where he had resided for the past seven years. "Doc" was born in Laconia, N.H., on Feb. 23, 1925, and was the son of Ernest W. and Julia Mae (Annis) Marshall.

    He received a master's degree in chemistry from Dartmouth College, then obtained his doctorate in geology at the University of Michigan in 1950.

    Born in 1927, she was the daughter of Capt. Conant Taylor and Marjorie Buffum Taylor. She grew up in Westerly and Newport, R.I., sailing on the Narragansett Bay, during the war years when her father was chief of staff at the Naval Operations Base.

    UNION — Jim Keefer, 76, died peacefully at home on June 15, 2017. Jim lived and appreciated life fully. He was born in New Jersey, grew up in Chatham, and studied art at Monmouth College. He was a member of the Mantoloking Fire Department and the Bay Head Yacht Club. In his youth he "borrowed" a Sneakbox in the dark of nights to teach himself to sail. His wife Sue was from Bay Head, NJ; they were married 51 years. Jim and Sue raised their two daughters on a farm in Woodstock, Vt.

    PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Retired Navy Senior Sonar Technician Wayne L. Mitchell, 74, of Portsmouth, R.I., unexpectedly passed away on March 12, 2017, at Charleton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, Mass. He was surrounded by family and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

    Wayne was born in Rockland, Maine, on June 5, 1942, and graduated in the Class of 1960 at Thomaston High School.

    CAMDEN — Irene Newburn-Boutin, 75, beloved wife of Andrew L. Boutin, died May 24, 2017, at her home following a battle with cancer. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on July 12, 1941, she was the daughter of Stephen and Ida (Kowalski) Kotarski. Following high school graduation, she attended business school for several years.

    Irene married John Newburn, an attorney, and worked in his legal practice for a number of years when they lived in California. After retiring, they moved to Vermont.

    ROCKLAND – Wayne S. Steeves, 70, died June 8, 2017, surrounded by his family at the Sussman House in Rockport after a long illness.

    Born in Rockland on June 12, 1946, he was the son of Charles S. and Edna Lathrop Steeves. He was educated in Rockland schools.

    Wayne first worked with his father, servicing oil burners. He then worked at various jobs, including Hugh Little Poultry, until his marriage to Carlene Mary Walker on April 24, 1965.

    He ran a backhoe for Wardwell Construction and worked for Babe Williams, and in his retirement worked at Penobscot Narrows Observatory.

    Scott graduated from Rockland District High School in 1973. He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following his honorable discharge he worked various jobs.

    AUGUSTA — William M. Butterfield Jr., 95, proud veteran, went home to be with the Lord on Memorial Day, May 29, 2017, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

    Born April 12, 1922, in Perham, Bill was the son of William Sr. and Lydia King Butterfield. He grew up in Perham, attending school there and working the land with his father on their potato farm. It was here that Bill cultivated his deep love of gardening and digging in the dirt.

    She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Roberts, one day earlier. She was also predeceased by her bothers, Wallace, Clarence, Carroll, Guy, Glenn and Sidney; and her sisters, Dorothy, Beulah, Marion and Elva.

    CAMDEN — On March 23, 2017, Evelyn Pitcher Richards went to her Lord. Mom was born Nov. 22, 1924, to Philderam Pitcher and Addie (Keller) Pitcher. She was one of three children, including Lawrence and Robert.

    In 1942 she met the love of her life, Clifton Richards, and they married and he soon went war.

    After the war was over their first of three children were born, Gary, and a couple years after that their daughter, Glenda, and then came their last, a son, Duane.

    She was born in Quincy, Mass., in 1914 to Louis and Nusra Haddad.

    Margaret is survived by her sons, Richard, James, Robert, William, David, Edward and Philip, whom she lived with for more than 30 years; and her daughter, Lorraine. She was predeceased by her son, Glenn in 1975; and her husband, Harvey J. Tinker in 1979.

    Alan was born Jan 24, 1932, in Waltham, Mass., and was the son of Walter and Lillian (Sobey) Brown. He was a member of the Class of 1950 at Waltham High School, and enlisted in the United States Army Reserves, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel and provided 34 years of faithful service.

    Dollis grew up in Mercer and attended the Riverview Seventh Day Adventist Grade School and graduated from Messalonskee High School in Oakland.

    On April 2, 1961, she married Leroy Lee Jones.

    Roger graduated from Crosby High, Class of 1951, and then enlisted in the National Guard in Belfast. Roger met Alma Chute and married her on April 4, 1953, in a double ceremony with Ernest and Ernestine Hooper.
