BANGOR — Although South Thomaston native Alex Young’s college football career at Bangor’s Husson University did not start entirely as planned, his senior year is.

During his freshman season, the Eagles went 0-10, followed up by a 2-8 record his sophomore year.

Then, in 2013, his junior year, the Eagles welcomed back head coach Gabby Price, who guided the team to a 5-5 record.

Now in his senior, and final, season, Young and the Eagles are 8-1 overall (7-0 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference) and are set to play in the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in program history Saturday, Nov. 22, at home, against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) .

To top it off, Young was recently honored as the conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Other local players on the team include Tyler Tran of Searsport and Belfast Area High (freshman), Derek Miller of Rockport and Rockland District High (junior), Jared Melkin of Thomaston and Rockland District High (senior), Dan Stone of Rockland and Oceanside High (sophomore), Zach Collier of Frankfurt and Belfast Area High School and Seth Batty of Owl’s Head and Oceanside High (sophomore.)
