AUGUSTA – Rep. Paige Zeigler, D-Montville, urges Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.  Search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurer’s website, maineunclaimedproperty.gov/.

“Many people are unaware they have unclaimed property,” said Zeigler, in a news release. “We want to make sure this property is returned to its rightful owners, so take a moment to see if you, a family member or your business is on the list.”

Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.

“Last year, Mainers lost more than $20 million in unclaimed property,” Zeigler said. “These funds could be from stock dividends, bank accounts or overpaid bills.”

There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.
