ROCKLAND — Wyman Philbrook, 81, passed away on Oct. 13, 2016, at Pen Bay Medical Center with family at his bedside. He had been ill for periods of time in the summer and early fall.

Wym, as he was known, had enjoyed two years at Bartlett Woods Retirement Community after a lifetime as a Vinalhaven Island resident.

During his years on the island he was an active volunteer in many community organizations. He loved the island and being part of the daily happenings of the town. He served as a selectman, was on the Island Community Medical Center Board, and on the Fox Island Electric Co-op during the exciting windmill project. He was also a volunteer fireman. For 50 years he was treasurer of the local Lions Club as well as a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge. As an officer on the Historical Society Board, he was always researching and accumulating facts about his island home. He proudly administered a scholarship fund helping graduating seniors pursue college educations.

As a younger man, Wym served his country in the Army, stationed in Europe in the same company as Elvis Presley. He returned home to work as a butcher, carpenter and retired from the post office.

Wyman was predeceased by his parents, Lyford and Rae Philbrook; his wife of 52 years, Astrid; his son, Wyman Jr.; and his brother, Harry. He is survived by his sister, Marion Tolman; his step-daughter and her husband, Kristine and Donald Sperry; his daughter-in-law, Hyon Philbrook; and his sisters-in-law, Annette Philbrook and Priscilla Rosen. He was adored by his five grandchildren and great grandchildren. He still has nephews and a grand-niece living with their families on Vinalhaven.

A service will be held at the Union Church early in November.

Donations may be made in his name to the Vinalhaven Historical Society at 41 High Street, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
