Working on the Camden Riverwalk

CAMDEN — The Riverwalk recreational trail along the Megunticook River is coming together one piece at a time, and by mid-summer 2014, it has already become a popular stretch for walkers and bicyclists.

A section of the Riverwalk that runs on the old tannery property on Washington Street is part of a broader vision to extend a path from Shirttail Point to the Public Landing at Camden Harbor. The tannery segment extends along a 25-foot easement that borders the river and the town-owned tannery property.

Builders of the trail hope to add interpretive signs and perhaps another bench, and are planning to write a grant to develop the Seabright Park section of the Riverwalk.

In early July, volunteers spent several hours on the trail, patching up five low spots, adjusting drainages a bit around the viewing platform, and cleaning up some invasive vegetation.

As they started working, a group of riders assembled up by the concrete raised section, near the benches, to start their weekly ride. It is a tradition now to start the ride down the Riverwalk and they were excited to explore new sections.

Several other walkers came through. The mother/daughter/baby group love this section of the trail and are hoping for additional sections to open. The same holds with the dog walkers.
Volunteers include Mac Thomas, Leni Gronros, Anita Brosius-Scott, Richard Stetson and Geoffrey Scott.
