Windjammers enjoy successful mountain biking start

The Camden Hills mountain biking team, who has won the championship crown 15 years consecutively, is off to a successful start to the 2014 campaign. 

The team performed well at Bradbury and also performed well in the last two races, which are recapped below. The Oct. 11 meet against Gould Academy was postponed to Saturday, Oct. 18. 

Wednesday, Oct. 1

At the Hallowell Reservoir, “The Res”, the Windjammers battled Kents Hill and won 174-144.

“The trail is a fast flowing mostly single track trail in between a network of double track trails along the Hallowell Reservoir,” Windjammer mountain bike head coach, Gary Spinney, stated.

The varsity race of three laps had Camden Hills’ Cyrus Demmons (44.40) edging out Ted Oulundsen of Kents Hill (46:26.58) with Drew Blackstone of Kents Hill (46:49) taking third place.

Other varsity racers for Camden Hills included Zeb Pease (4th; 46:57), Nick Czuchra (5th; 48:54), Zoe Zwecker (8th; 54:48) and Aidan Acoster (10th; 1:15.23).
 


The junior varsity race of two laps had Zachary Hand (35:20) of Camden Hills followed by teammates Max Horovitz (2nd; 35:21), and Japheth Scott (3rd; 35:22). Other Windjammers included Kaden Harrison-Billiate (5th; 37:13), Hans Christian-Angel (6th; 37.326), Makoto Hayashi (8th; 39:107) and Lucy Hayward (15th; 47:54).

Wednesday, Oct. 8

On Oct. 8, 12 New England Schools from New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine descended on Fryeburg Academy to compete in a Lakes Region #5 race.

Gould Academy (Bethel, Maine) took first place overall with 1208.4 points, Proctor Academy (Andover, N.H.) came in second place with 1138 points, followed by Camden Hills in third place with 1066.4 points.

The top three finishers for the Boys A Division race, consisted of four laps, were: Max Southam of Gould Academy (1st; 42:26.300), Kyler Walker of Gould Academy (2nd; 42:44.100) and Scott Johannon of Proctor Academy (3rd; 43:14.900).

Windjammer Aidan Acosta (9th; 45.35.300) was the lone Windjammer to finish in the top ten. 

Other Windjammers completing the A Division course included Cyrus Demmons (14th; 47.34), Nick Czuchra (18th; 49:27.200) and Owen Hilt (23rd; 51:37.800)

.

In the Boys B Division, consisted of three laps, Zachary Hand (8th; 39:42.500) of Camden Hills and Max Horovitz (9th; 42.500) were the line Windjammers to finish in the top ten. Japheth Scott finished 27th with a time of 41:32.400.

In the Boys C Division race, consisted of two laps, William Hamer from Dublin Academy (N.H.) finished first with a time of 26:58.200. Hans Christian Angel from Camden Hills finished in fifth place with a time of 28:38.400 and Windjammer Makoto Hayashi finished in 15th place with a time of 30:38.900.

In the Girls A Division race, consisted of four laps, Melissa Seib of Gould Academy took top honors with a time of 48:09.700.17.

In the Girls B Division race, consisted of three laps,
 Leela Hornbach of Gould Academy rode to first place with a time of 43:06.000. Zoe Zwecker of Camden Hills finished in third place with a time of 44:28.900. 



In the Girls C Division race, consisted of two laps, Maddie Simard (school unknown) took first place with a time of 32:29.700. Lucy Hayward of Camden Hills finished in 7th place at 48:07.800.
 


“We are very pleased with a strong third place finish in this competitive lakes region race," said Spinney. "The Starks Hill trail was fast and relatively flat which probably worked to the advantage of some other riders as we usually practice on more technical terrain than what we rode on today at Fryeburg. As a collective group our racing consistency in placing in each division helped us gain points as a team today."
