Windjammers claim 16th straight state title

ROCKPORT — Camden Hills Regional High School is probably one the very few, if not the only school, who can say they have won 16 consecutive state championships in any sport. 

As of Saturday, Oct. 18, those on the Windjammers’ mountain bike team can say they won the high school its 16 straight state championship in mountain biking. 

The Windjammers will receive the state championship trophy Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Bond Brook after the Maine Mountain Biking Series championship race, according to Windjammer head coach Gary Spinney, who is in his first year at the program’s helm. 

At the Oct. 18 race, hosted by Gould Academy, the Windjammers finished third behind Gould Acadmey and Proctor Academy (N.H.).

Coming in fourth was Fryeburg Academy and in fifth was Kents Hill. 

Oct. 18: Gould Academy Race Recap

On Oct. 18, five Northern New England Schools from New Hampshire and Maine, along with several independent racers, competed in this Lakes Region #6 race. Gould Academy took first place overall with 1212.2 points, Proctor Academy (Andover, N.H.) came in second place with 1056.3.points, followed by the Windjammers of Camden Hills in third place with 1016.3 points.

Fryeburg came in fourth place with 913.3 and Kents Hill came in fifth place among the 15 teams racing with 903.4 points.


Individual results were the following at Gould Academy Northern New England Mountain Bike Race

BOYS A Division (3 laps)
 — Max Southam (1st; 53:08.900) of Gould Academy and Kyler Walker (2nd; 53:27.10) also of Gould Academy set a blistering pace drafting one another for the entire race to take the top two places followed by Caleb Clarke (3rd; 53:57.600), also from Gould Academy. Windjammer Aidan Acosta (6th; 58:10.700) and Windjammer Cyrus Demmons (8th; 59:59.500) finished in the top ten in Boys A Division.

Other Camden Hills Boys A riders included Nick Czuchra, who had a shoulder injury after a bad spill and wasn’t able to finish, and Windjammer Owen Hill who had a knee injury after taking a spill in a rocky area and also did not finish and was lost for the rest of the season.

BOYS B Division (2 laps) — Windjammer Zachary Hand, the first B finisher, burned up the trail to an impressive third place finish in 39:42.500.

Other B Division riders for the Windjammers included Max Horovitz (5th; 45:20.300) and Japheth Scott (7th; 45:30.100) rounding off the team score. Makoto Hayashi came in 13th with a time of 49:12.600 and Kaden Harrison-Billiate finishing the Windjammer scoring by coming in 15th place with a time of 51:56.300.

GIRLS B Division (2 laps) 
— Rose Goldberg of Gould Academy took top honors with a time of 47:37.200. Windjammer Zoe Zwecker finished in second place with a time of 50:21.100.

“We are very pleased with a solid third place finish in this competitive Northern New England Race." said Spinney. "The Gould Mountain Bike trail was very challenging and was very technical trail. The [Camden Hills] Mountain Bike team keeps improving with each race.
