Are you running hot this summer? So much to do; week whizzes by and then it’s the weekend again? Maine summers are all about “catch it while you can” and this weekend there is a lot to catch.

Rockland’s first Sculpture Races

Saturday, August 12 — Rockland

As we were the first to report on the “Art on Wheels”, Rockland’s first Sculpture Race is taking place Saturday at 9 a.m. A Sculpture Race is a short race (less than a mile) of pushed, pulled and pedaled artwork followed by an exhibition. Similar to a Bed Race, the focus is more on the art installation itself and the method of locomotion to move it. Get ready to see some funny, crazy contraptions zooming down the street. Race starts at the corner of Winter Street & Park Street. Check out the map here!

Rotary Pizza Grand Opening

Saturday, August 12 — Rockland

Might as well make a day of it in Rockland, because this is going to be fun.Come check out what locals are already equating to “Thorndike pizza good!” Rotary Pizza is Rockland’s newest independent, scratch-made pizzaria and that's great reason to throw a party! The Juke Rockets are scheduled to play some great tunes on the slab, while Threshers Brewing will be bringing there taps to Rockland to join the fun. Goes to 5 to 9 p.m. rain or shine.

Rockport Opera House’s 125th Year Party

Sunday, August 12 — Rockport

To celebrate its 125th year of existence, Rockport Opera House is throwing a day-long party and my recommendations are to attend the 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. street Performance of Bucket Drumming followed by the 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. show of Creatures of Habit  with food by Flatbread Pizza. General admission tickets for Creatures of Habit are $10 per person and can be purchased at the Rockport Town Office in advance or at the door on Saturday, August 12th between 12:30 and 9:00 p.m. All other events are free.

Killer Road Trip: Foothills Food Festival

Saturday, August 12 — Norway

As long as street parties are in this weekend’s theme, you might as well make it the road trip destination as well. You’re looking at chefs whipping up dishes from local food provided by the on-site farmers, a beer garden, speakers and workshops and live music and entertainment. Goes from 12 to 9 p.m. Check out the website for more info.

MBH&H Boatyard Dog Trials

Sunday August 13—Rockland

This wacky event actually encourages cheating as long as the owner and dog get completely soaked. The goal is for each dog to complete three events within the 8-minute time limit: 1. The “Dockside Obstacle Course” — Dog and handler negotiate a maze of lobster traps, piles of rope, buoys, and other funky dockside paraphernalia. 2. The “Dinghy Hop” — Dog and handler scramble in and out of a very unstable dinghy that’s tethered to a float. 3. The “Freestyle” segment — Each dog (and their person) shows off his or her special talents. The official trials will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the waterfront. Admission to the trials is included in the price of a show ticket ($15/ticket, kids under 12 free). FMI: maineboats.com/boatshow It’s not just awesome. It’s pawsome.
