Web Tech Buzz: Facebook Messenger, Pinterest messaging, Ello, My Business app, IOS 8

There's so much banter and conversation over the installation of Facebook's new Messenger app:. "You can't message without it," "it's the most invasive app I've ever seen," "I want to message someone, but I can't without this silly app!"

All this led up to Facebook's official message stating that it's not really their app that's the problem, but the fact that the engines that drive these apps are similar to a rainforest jungle. The levels and stages that developers have to pass are becoming more and more difficult to manage. The differences in "permissions" for Android and Apple devices are intense. If you actually take the time to read them, I can honestly compare it to a commercial for the latest Food and Drug Administration approved over the counter remedy. If you take it, you'll die, and if you don't, you'll die... eventually. The concerns over privacy are now a headline news story.

Bottom line: It's not as bad as you think, and you're going to have to deal with it, or cut bait. Personally, I'm dealing. I use Facebook's calling feature and its messaging service more than I use text messaging on my Android phone.

In other news, and eerily unique, Pinterest announced that it too would be gaining the ability to message users between accounts. Someone can send you a "pin" privately, and you can respond with a message or a "reply pin." Needless to say, if it's a messaging opportunity, it's going to be HUGE, no matter the platform or device.

Stepping away from that, I'd like to suggest that we all download "My Business" from Google (available on Android and Apple devices.) This app gives you all the "back end" control that you need while managing your free business account with Google. This encompasses your Google Places listing, a Google+ account for your business, and pretty incredible insights offered by search results, driving directions and everything else Google can track. Since we all know that Google is a powerful tool when searching for things on our mobile or desktop devices, it's worth it to gain access to this free service and improve the view of your business online.

This week, a couple of different items caught my eye as something that my audience of readers might find interesting and useful in your time spent online.

The anti-Facebook (advertiser free, anti-tracking) social network known to the public as Ello is racing into the hearts and feeds of many of us who are glued to our devices more often than we'd like, or like to admit. The "no ads, all privacy" approach being taken by the creators and developers of Ello, is quite refreshing to the masses, having been bombarded with Facebook privacy news, and other related quandaries of late.

Ello seems to still be in beta, or invitation only mode, but judging by the up-to-date blog they keep, a public release is right around the corner. You might consider requesting an invite, because from what I can see, it's looking pretty interesting and cool. And if nothing else, you'll stay in the loop as it moves toward public release.

Below is Ello's "Manifesto" on the landing page, which you see when you go to ello.co. You can also get a taste of what user profiles look like on the home page while waiting for your invitation, should you request one:

Your social network is owned by advertisers.

Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that's bought and sold.

We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.

We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate — but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.

You are not a product.

Next on the list, without going too far into it, we've all been made aware that iOS 8, (for those of you with Apple products), is the latest BIG update from Apple headquarters. The new and quite magnificent iPhones (6 and 6 Plus) that followed have had their ups and downs, and "bent over backwards" (no pun intended) to prove their worthiness. If you're following the latest in popular tech news, you know what I'm referring to. Nevertheless, Apple will most likely come out unscathed.

In closing, as always, I urge you to comment and ask questions about social media, online marketing, website development or anything in between.
