Web Tech Buzz: Facebook Groups and video sharing, Twitter cut and paste

Mon, 11/24/2014 - 7:30am

This week in social media, Facebook introduced a new app they've appropriately titled "Groups." This app, according to Facebook, is meant to "help people share faster and more easily with all the groups in their life."

Upon first glance on the Android platform, it seems pretty handy. Looks as though Facebook likes the "Messenger" look, giving the Groups app the bubbly icons, and their signature blue/white color scheme. My Groups are in order of most used, I can easily enter and exit each Group I desire to look through, and notifications aren't overpowering, as I see a number pasted atop each icon showing how many notifications each individual Group has.

I can already tell that I will get heavy usage out of this app, as I moderate and engage myself in many of Facebook's Groups on a daily basis.

Twitter rolled out an update that allows users to send a tweet in a direct message to another Twitter user. This is a step up from the previous "mail a tweet" or "copy a link" to tweet. I see this being useful if something that you'd like to share should remain private, or might be confidential in a sense. I don't think it's a huge change, since we could already retweet or use the old standard "copy and paste" routine with a mention to someone publicly, but we'll see.

In case you were wondering, sharing is caring. Facebook has at least 60 percent of video sharing under it's ever widening belt. That tells me that the minute you upload your videos to YouTube, you should immediately also upload to Facebook. Short of buying Google's YouTube platform, it seems as though it was a calculated move by Facebook to allow videos to "automatically begin playing" as a user scrolls their respective timeline's. This must have a ripple effect, and even though there were those that disliked the update to Facebook's timeline, it worked.
