CAMDEN — Warren Merritt George passed away peacefully May 19, 2015, with his family at his side at Gosnell Hospice in Scarborough. He was born in Margaretville, N.Y., on Feb. 17, 1928. He was the son of Evelyn and Kenneth George.

He grew up on the family farm, which was very memorable to Warren. His family moved to Rockland, where he attended high school and graduated in 1946.

While living in Rockland, Warren developed a love for sailing and flying airplanes. He was in Sea Scouts, where he learned to sail. He enjoyed sailing his boat, Sea Gull, with his brother, Fred. He learned to fly at the age of 16 from Art Harjula in a J-3 Piper Cub. Flying became an obsession for Warren. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps out of high school and in 1949, joined the U.S. Air Force serving in the Korean War. After being discharged, he and another local Rockland boy, Sandy Gray, traveled to Saudi Arabia to become desert pilots for ARAMCO. From there, Warren enjoyed a successful career with Trans World Airlines, where he traveled the world. It was during that time that he met his lovely wife, Barbara, who was a stewardess for TWA. They raised three daughters in Connecticut before retiring to Camden in 1980.

Warren loved sailing with family and friends on Penobscot Bay. He and Barbara were long time members of the Camden Yacht Club. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. His favorite fly fishing destination was Kokadjo. He loved anything to do with the outdoors. Warren enjoyed volunteering for the Owls Head Transportation Museum, where he flew many of the antique airplanes. He was a terrific dancer, swinging to the tunes of Glen Miller. Warren and Barbara had many good friends who they enjoyed spending time with, along with their daughters and grandchildren.

Warren was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Fred; and his wife of 50 years, Barbara. Surviving are his daughters, Pam Ratti and her husband, Steve, of St. James, N.C., Cindy Branscom and her husband, John, of Hallowell, and Linda Nicholas and her husband, Patrick, of Cape Elizabeth; and six grandchildren, Monica, Brendan, Andrew, Cassandra, Ryan and Austin.

The family would especially like to thank Long Funeral Home of Camden and Gosnell Memorial Hospice of Scarborough for the care, respect and dignity they gave Warren and their loving support to the family. A private family graveside service will be held at Thomaston Village Cemetery.
