WALDOBORO — Waldoboro Recreation Department's Adult Coed Softball League began its 10th season last week with over 175 players from Knox and Lincoln Counties scattered over 12 teams.

"As far as I know, we are the largest Coed Softball league in the area and have been for quite some time," said Waldoboro Recreation Director Kyle Santheson. “We hold ourselves to a pretty high standard and I think people appreciate that.”

The league plays by American Softball Association (ASA) rules with a few twists. Men must use wooden bats and remain behind markers in the outfield when woman are at bat. The ladies are allowed to bunt and automatic walks are issued in certain situations. The average age of the game day lineup must be 33 or greater. 10 players are in the field, three of which must be woman and all players take a turn swinging the bat at the plate.

Teams play an 11-game regular season schedule, followed by a double–elimination playoff tournament, which is scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 4.

In all, there are over 85 games to be played this fall and games will be played at Waldoboro Little League's Foster Field, Medomak Middle School, Medomak Valley High School and Friendship Recreation Field on Tuesday's and Wednesday's at 5:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
