(Photo by Ron Hawkes)ROCKPORT – The Vinalhaven softball team had a pair of games to makeup with Rangeley and not a weekend free to do so, thus the games were scheduled at Camden Hills on Thursday and the two teams meet at the school for a 10 am and 12 pm double header.
Vinalhaven won the first game 7-6 scoring five in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Rangeley took the second game 14-10 scoring four in the top of the seventh and shutting down the Vikings in the bottom of the inning for the win,.
Game one was all Rangeley for the first six innings, though Vinalhaven had their chances earlier, however in the bottom of the seventh, the bats came alive providing three hits and two walks with a RBI ground out to end the game with a come from behind 7-6 score.
Ashley Davis-Oakes pitched for Vinalhaven allowing six runs, four earned on nine hits and two walks while striking out two.
Taylor Esty pitched for Rangeley allowing seven runs on seven hits and nine walks while striking out six.
Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings had left seven runners on base and needed to put together some hits to win this game. Davis-Oakes singled and went to second on a single by Taylor Littlefield. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Ashley Hamilton struck out. Davis-Oakes scored on a passed ball, Tracie Webster walked to load the bases. Bailey Wadleigh walked scoring Littlefield and bringing up Maddie Hallowell who singled scoring Webster. Wadleigh stole third and scored on a passed ball sending Hallowell to third with one out and the Viking catcher, eighth grader Hannah Ames to the plate. With a 3-2 count on Ames, who had fouled off three pitches as well, she put the ball in play on a soft roller, just hard enough to get past Esty in the circle, but slow enough that there was no way for Rangeley second baseman Abby Abbott to make a play at home as Hallowell slide in the the game winning run.
Offensively for Vinalhaven, Davis-Oakes (run, single), Littlefield (run, 2 singles), Hamilton (single), Webster, (2 runs), B. Wadleigh (run), Hallowell (2 runs, 2 singles, RBI), and Ames (single, run, RBI).
For Rangeley, Abbott (single, double, 2 runs), Tori Letarte (2 runs, 2 singles), Esty (run, 3 doubles), Blayke Morin (run), Michaela Shorey (single), and Seve Derry-Deraps (single).
