VINALHAVEN — The driver of a Dodge pickup truck that crashed into a tree on Vinalhaven Jan. 17, around noon, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tim Carroll in a press release Wednesday.

Patrick Gasperini, 28, of Vinalhaven, reportedly crashed into a large tree and rolled over.

Deputy Rob Potter responded to the crash, which occurred on Lands Island Road.

According to the release, prior to the crash witnesses reported seeing a black Dodge pickup travel past them at a high rate of speed. After passing by, the 2016 Dodge ran head-on into a large tree, rolled about 100 feet and came to rest in a group of rocks at the bottom of a steep embankment.

“Although Gasperini was conscious and alert at the scene, and was assisted by rescue personnel to the waiting ambulance, Gasperini died at the hospital due to the extent of internal injuries he had suffered,” said Carroll in the release.

Gasperini died Tuesday night at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, according to Carroll.

From statements reportedly made by Gasperini at the scene, Potter believes there was a medical issue prior to the crash. Carroll said the crash is still under investigation.

Potter was assisted at the scene by Vinalhaven Fire and EMS.
