ROCKLAND — Vera V. Townsend, 85, died peacefully Jan. 28, 2016 at the Sussman House, in Rockport, with her loving family by her side. Vera was born Sept. 23, 1930 to parents John Greenrose and Hazel Marie McIntire Greenrose, in Rockland.

Vera grew up in Rockport and attended local schools, all the while working on the family farm with her two brothers. Vera then moved to Warren, where she met the love of her life, Earl “Shag” Townsend. Together, they settled in Rockland on Thompson Meadow Road, which was always referred to as “Vera’s Mountain” where they raised their family.

Vera was widowed while her family was fairly young due to Shag’s death in an automobile accident. Always putting her children first, Vera worked at the local fish factories — Port Clyde, Holme’s and Stinsons canneries. Many times, Vera was seen walking to work from Old County Road to the shorefront of Rockland, and back home again.

Vera’s family and friends will always remember her love of gardening, canning her vegetables — “famous for her Mustard Pickles,” as well as cooking for anyone who came to her house. She never refused anyone lodging or food. Her home’s location allowed that she could enjoy what nature offered and she cherished feeding the birds.

Vera was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Earl, and her brother Oscar. Left to cherish her memory are her children: sons Harvey Richardson and Rodney Townsend, both of Rockland; her daughters Cynthia Bend and husband Robert, of Trenton, Fla., Nancy Gamage and husband John, of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Rhonda Batty and her companion, John Bennett, of Rockland.

She is also is survived by her brother Reino Greenrose, of Camden, as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Per Vera’s wishes, no services will be held. The family is planning a gathering in the Summer of 2016 when family and friends can share memories of Vera, and share a laugh or a beverage.

Vera had a saying on her wall for many years and the family has chosen to share it:

Weather: (This is to let you know what the weather is)Just hang me on a nail outside —

When I’m wet it’s raining.
When I’m white, it’s snowing.
When I’m stiff, it’s freezing.
When I’m bright, it’s sunny.
When I’m gone, you got ripped off!

Rest in Peace Vera!
