VINALHAVEN — Vera Ruth (Guptill) Ames passed away peacefully Sept. 12, 2014, at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead.

Vera lived a very full life, residing between Vinalhaven and Matinicus. She spent her childhood on Criehaven, moving to Rockland in her teens. A member of "Amerca's Greatest Generation," Vera helped to protect our freedom on the home front while assembling Navy assault boats at the Camden shipyard.

She loved her family and was always there to help whenever needed. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Vera was predeceased by her first husband, Lyford "Dike" Conary; her sister, Virginia Hartford; and her second husband, Lavon S. Ames Jr. Surviving is her brother, Albert "Bill" Guptill and his wife, Margaret; her daughters, Hazel smith and her husband, Malcolm, and Linda Lynch and her husband, Burke; her step-daughter, Carolyn Ames; herstep-son, Lavon "Biscuit" Ames III; her sister, Joan Mitchell; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to Vinalhaven Eldercare Services, 18 Beaver Dam Road, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant River Chapel. Interment will follow in the Brown's Head Cemetery, followed by a reception at the home of Linda and Burke Lynch.
