UNITY (Updated Aug. 17, 4:50 p.m.) — Maine State Police late Wednesday afternoon identified the driver and second passenger in Tuesday night’s fatal crash in Unity as two 17-year-old boys, one from Swanville and one from Searsport.

Tyler Cherry of Swanville was the driver of the 2002 Dodge Dakota, which crashed off Route 9 in Unity and struck a utility pole, killing passenger 20-year-old Harold Fickett III of Clifton. Eric Bowen of Searsport was identified as the second passenger.

Cherry and Bowen both sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, which severed the utility pole and prompted closure of Route 9 (Bangor Road) for several hours Aug. 16 while troopers investigated the accident. Fickett was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

A chocolate Labrador that had reportedly fled from the crash scene has since been found, and is safe, also according to McCausland.
