WASHINGTON (Feb. 23, 1:15 p.m.) — State Fire Marshals say a second body has been recovered from the house fire in Washington Monday morning. The body of 53-year-old Steven Rhodes was found in the rubble of the fire that had fallen into the basement.

Investigators are now attempting to determine how the fire started.

Being treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland for burns and smoke inhalation is 56-year-old Elizabeth Rhodes, who lived at the home with her husband and their adult son. The two men are believed to be the fire victims. The Rhodes’ son, 25-year-old Isaac Rhodes was pulled from inside the home by firefighters and deputies, who attempted to resuscitate him.

Both bodies will be examined by the State Medical Examiner's Office.

WASHINGTON (Feb. 23, 10:45 a.m.) — The State Fire Marshal's Office has now confirmed that one man is dead, a second is missing and a woman was injured in a house fire Monday morning in Washington.

The fire destroyed the one story house on Cattle Pound Road, off from Route 105. Neighbors discovered the fire about 5:45 a.m. and there was heavy fire and smoke when firefighters arrived. One end of the home was fully engulfed when the first responder arrived on scene.

According to the Fire Marshal’s Office, the dead man was pulled from the house by firefighters and Knox County Sheriff’s deputies, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. The body of the missing man is believed to be in the rubble of the house, most of which has fallen into the basement.

The woman survivor is being treated at Pen Bay Medical Center for smoke inhalation and burns.

A team of Fire Marshal investigators are at the scene and will attempt to pinpoint the cause of the fire. They also will oversee the search of the rubble for the missing man.

WASHINGTON (Jan. 23, 8 a.m.) — Washington Fire Department remains at a home on Cattle Pound Road, where the first responder on scene just before 6 a.m. reported one end of the home fully on fire.

Knox County Chief Deputy Tim Carroll confirmed that one person has died in the fire, and at least one other sustained burn injuries.

The original call about the structure fire came in to Knox Regional Communications at around 5:45 a.m. on Jan. 23. Jefferson and Union were called for mutual aid, and eventually a water shuttle had to be set up between the scene and the fire pond behind the fire station.

Water is now being shuttled in from a hydrant on Route 17, where traffic is being slowed due to the fire engine activity. The road is also becoming icy, and motorists are urged to use caution and drive slowly.

Union ambulance was also called to respond to the Cattle Pound Road fire, and soon two more ambulances were requested, along with a request to notify the Fire Marshal’s Office. It has not been confirmed if the injured are residents or fire personnel.
