WALDOBORO — A couple from Massachusetts died in a head-on car crash on Route 1 in Waldoboro early Friday afternoon, according to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde early Friday evening.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Waldoboro police responded to the crash, which occurred just north of Wink’s Auto Service on Route 1. When officers arrived, Labombarde said they observed two vehicles involved in a head-on crash in the northbound lane.

Killed in the crash were Peggy Haldrich, 70, and Raymond Thompson, 68, both of Whitinsville, Massachusetts. They had been visiting the area to attend a wedding in Waldoboro, police said.

Following an investigation into the crash, Labombarde said it was determined that 63-year-old Edward Bean of Waldoboro was driving in the southbound lane when he crossed into the northbound lane and crashed into an oncoming 2014 black Mitsubishi vehicle. Bean was driving a 2007 black Dodge Caliber.

Both occupants of the Mitsubishi were pronounced dead at the scene, said Labombarde.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, said Labombarde, April 22. He said alcohol and speed are not factors in the crash.

In addition to Waldoboro police, fire and ambulance, Warren Fire Department assisted with mutual aid.
