BROOKS — The man suspected of robbing Unity Pharmacy April 9 has been taken into custody following days on the run, according to a media report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Andrew Sousa, 33, of Brooks, came to police attention following a collaborative effort between the public, Belfast Police, Maine State Police, Maine Probation and Parole, the Maine Computer Crimes Unit and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, though the Waldo County Sheriff’s Ofice was the primary investigating agency into the robbery, according to the news release.

Sousa was spotted by police April 9 but was not detained until April 18, in the morning, when the Sheriff’s Office obtained information that Sousa was at a campsite in a wooded area of Brooks.

A team of deputies, accompanied by Belfast Police K-9 Dex, responded to the area, where Sousa was apprehended after a brief foot chase. Following his arrest, Sousa was taken to Waldo County General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

He has been charged with robbery, which is a class B felony.

Sousa is accused of walking into Unity Pharmacy around 1:30 p.m., April 9, wearing all black with his face covered by a ski mask. He reportedly passed an employee a note demanding medication and received an undisclosed amount before fleeing the scene.

The investigation into the robbery remains under investigation and additional details will be released as they become available.
