ROCKPORT - A two-car crash Thursday around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Routes 17 and 90 in Rockport demolished both vehicles but did not cause any injuries to the drivers.

According to Rockport Police Officer Craig Cooley, who responded to the accident, Nichole Grassi-Normand, 38, of Rockport, was driving a 2005 Ford pick-up truck and was travelling eastbound on Route 17 and as she went into the intersection an unknown vehicle came into her lane of traffic causing her to go into the westbound lane “quickly.” Gerald Pushaw, 43, of Rockport, who was driving a 2001 GMC pick-up truck in the westbound lane was unable to react in time to avoid contact with Grassi-Normand’s vehicle.

Cooley attributed the accident to an unknown vehicle going through a red light at the intersection of Routes 17 and 90, causing Grassi-Normand to go into the westbound lane.

Pushaw’s airbag deployed causing it to smoke and radiator fluid from his vehicle also leaked on the road at the crash site. According to Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley, they were able to clean up the spills fairly quickly by using a “speedy dry” chemical absorbent provided by Steve Laite of Camden Exxon.

“We are frequently responding to accidents at this intersection, especially caused by drivers trying to beat the light before it turns red. It was extremely fortunate that no one was injured since the vehicles were completely demolished,” said Peasley.

Rockport Fire and Northeast Ambulance also responded to the accident.
