Tom Gray: Why I am running for Rockport Select Board

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 12:00pm

My name is Tom Gray, and I am running for the Rockport Select Board. I would appreciate your vote on June 13. Many folks in the community will know me from my work as a teacher in the Five Town school district. I have lived in Rockport since 1999, have raised my children here, and care deeply about preserving our town’s unique character. Rockport offers the perfect blend of natural splendor, cultural richness, and neighborly connection. As a select board member, I will commit myself to enhancing the lifestyle that we all enjoy as Rockport residents.

I believe that my greatest strengths as a select board member will be an open mind, strong communication skills, consensus-building, and common sense. Through my professional background as a teacher, department head, and program coordinator, I have a highly-developed skill set working in teams, developing budgets, and collaborating with others to build programs. I know how to listen keenly and then advocate strongly. I understand that any solution will require careful consideration of multiple factors.

If elected to the select board, you can trust that I will seek out various points of view, work hard to make informed decisions, and remain grounded even in disagreement. There is no issue more important that maintaining strong, constructive relationships.

Rockport has always found a way to strike the right balance. We are business-friendly, but not commercialized. We have high aspirations, but are also down-to-earth. We welcome visitors from around the world, but maintain the family-friendly sense of community that defines our home. We truly have something for everybody. I hope that in bringing a fresh perspective to the select board, I can make a strong contribution to our community, with an eye to making decisions that benefit all of our residents.
