UNITY — A Unity man, who was a roommate to two Unity College students, died in a skateboarding accident on campus early Wednesday morning, according to Maine State Police.

Troopers responded to the college’s entrance on Quaker Hill Road around 1:30 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive man. According to police, Christopher Garbinski, 23, was riding on a skateboard along with his roommates, Sylvanus Egerton, 27, and Luke Munster, 24. Garbinski was leading the others as they descended down Loop Road toward the intersection of Quaker Hill Road and they were reportedly traveling too fast to make the left-hand turn.

Garbinski crossed Quaker Hill Road and crashed into several birch trees, and died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash, according to state Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. Egerton and Munster also crashed in the same area, but sustained minor injuries. McCausland said that Egerton and Munster are also Unity residents.

McCausland said Garbinski’s roommates gave him immediate first aid, which was supplemented by Unity EMS a short time later.

The three men had been reportedly visiting friends on the campus and were heading home when the crash occurred. Garbinski was not a student at the college.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office plans to perform an autopsy to determine how Garbinski died.
