Three locals collect basketball honors, to participate in Maine McDonald’s high school basketball events

Wed, 02/21/2018 - 3:00pm

At news conferences in Portland, Augusta and Bangor Wednesday, Feb. 21, the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches announced the AA/A/B North and South, and C/D North and South player selections for the 2018 Maine McDonald's High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games.

Student-athletes representing more than 100 high schools from across the state have been honored with selection to the All-Star team in their school classification, or to the All-State Academic Team.

All-Star teams were selected based upon ballot returns in a statewide high school basketball coaches’ vote conducted by the MABC in January.

20 coaches were named a 2018 MABC Coach of the Year in another vote conducted by MABC, and those coaches will coach the All-Star team in their respective classification.

The 2018 Maine McDonald's High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games will take place Saturday, March 10 at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University in Bangor. The game-day program will feature head-to-head competition between top players in the state in North vs. South basketball action, plus a girls three-pint shootout competition and the Dr. Pepper Slam Dunk Contest.

All-Star players and All-Star coaches, members of the All-State Academic teams, Regional Foul Shooting Champions, Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Award recipients, MABC Contributor Award and Media Award honorees, and Mr. and Miss Basketball will be honored at an awards banquet on March 9 in Bangor.

All-Star game tickets may be purchased at Husson University on March 10 and are good for all four games and events. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and children age 12 and under. More information about the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games is available at mainemcdonaldsbasketball.org.

The finalists for Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball will be announced after the Regional Championship games. Committees are also choosing the recipients of two $2,000 academic scholarships awarded to one boy and one girl member of the All-State Academic Team, and two Spirit of the Game Award winners who embody the spirit of the sport, exemplify sportsmanship, support and inspire their teammates and coaching staff, and show an ability to overcome obstacles and boundaries.

The 2018 All-Star Games mark Maine McDonald’s 30th consecutive year as lead sponsor of this event. Net proceeds from the games benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine. Last year’s All-Star Weekend raised a record $47,895 for the Charities. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000.

In each of the 61 McDonald’s located in Maine and four located in eastern New Hampshire, McDonald’s customers toss their change into RMHC Maine donation boxes. A portion of this money directly benefits the RMHC Maine Grants Program. Since 1989 more than $3 million has been granted to hundreds of non-profit organizations that share the mission of healthy children, healthy families. By partnering with these selected organizations, there is far broader outreach and a greater positive impact in the lives of children in Maine and northern New Hampshire. More information is available at www.rmhcmaine.org.

In addition to underwriting the cost of planning and executing the event, Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operators work hand-in-hand with the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches and these sponsors to make the event possible. Presenting sponsor Bangor Savings Bank, Banquet Sponsors University of Southern Maine and Dr Pepper, Organizing Partner Rinck Advertising, Spirit of the Game Award Sponsors Spectrum Healthcare Partners and Dead River Company.
