A three-car accident Monday afternoon in Wiscasset sent three to the hospital and backed traffic up for almost an hour.

Crews responded after 3 p.m. Monday, July 21 when a gold Chevy Cavalier reportedly struck the back of a Kia Sportage, which struck the back on an RV that had stopped for pedestrians on Main Street near Red's Eats.

According to eyewitnesses, the Cavalier lost its brakes and slammed into the back of the Kia.

The nine-year-old passenger in the Cavalier and the two occupants in the Kia were sent to the hospital; the nine-year-old suffered a head injury and the pair in the Kia suffered injuries that Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline said were common to people who have been in accidents where the air bag deployed.

The three people in the RV were uninjured and the vehicle took minimal damage. The other two vehicles had to be towed.

“They were both transported to Miles to have their injuries checked,” Cline said. “They reported difficulty breathing, which is standard with injuries from airbag deployment.

“The woman was born in '32 and the boy was born in 2004, and it looks like she lost her brakes and couldn't stop. The boy has significant swelling on the left side of his head and he was taken to Midcoast.”

The woman driving the Cavalier was identified as Ann Sparks, 81, of Wiscasset. She and the the juvenile, who was identified as her grandson, were both taken to Midcoast Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The RV was driven by Mercedes Campillos Alonso, 59, of Spain while the Kia was driven by Gordon Sundeen, 78, and Roberta Sundeen, 68, both of Florida.
