THOMASTON — The Friends of the Thomaston Public Library presents FRIDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES, 6:30 p.m.

    SHOWING: Music, Music, Music!

    January 2: Glenn Miller Story

    1953 G 115minutes

One of the most profitable biopics ever filmed, The Glenn Miller Story traces Miller's rise from pit-orchestra trombone player to leader of the most successful big band of his era — the early 1940s. James Stewart plays Glenn. June Allyson plays his wife, Helen, who learns the value of patience while Glenn searches relentlessly for "the sound" that will put him on top. Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa pop up in cameos.

    January 9:  Gigi

    1958 G 116 minutes

Leslie Caron stars as Gigi, an avant-garde French waif being groomed as the fille de joie of affluent and handsome Gaston (Louis Jourdan). Soon Gigi metamorphoses into a stunning beauty, and the head-over-heels Gaston asks for her hand. But Gigi's courtesan grandmother is aghast: no one in the family has ever considered something as plebeian as matrimony! Also starring Maurice Chevalier. This 1958 gem won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director (Vincente Minnelli).

January 16: Singin' In The Rain

    1952 G 103 minutes

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor combine their talents in one of the greatest big-screen musicals ever made, a two-time Oscar nominee that includes the songs "Good Morning," "Make 'Em Laugh" and the iconic title tune. When Hollywood attempts the transition from silent films to talkies, a matinee idol (Kelly) hopes to make the cut. But he's hampered by a silent-movie queen (Jean Hagen) with a voice like fingernails on a blackboard.

    January 23: Showboat

    1951 NR 107 minutes

Married entertainers (Ava Gardner and Robert Sterling) are forced to leave the showboat Cotton Blossom because of the wife's mixed blood. The captain's daughter (Kathryn Grayson) and gambler Gaylord Ravenal (Howard Keel) take over the act, fall in love, marry and leave the boat for Chicago. There, they live off his gambling earnings, which dry up fast. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein provide the score for this adaptation of the Broadway hit. William Warfield sings "Old Man River".

    January 30:  Love Me Tonight

    1932 NR 89 minutes

This sweet, infectious 1932 classic featuring music by Rodgers and Hart stars Maurice Chevalier as Maurice Courtelin, a tailor who moves in with the family of a French royal, Vicomte Gilbert de Vareze (Charles Ruggles), who owes him money, but can't pay. The Vicomte introduces Courtelin as a baron, and soon everyone's enchanted by him, including Princess Jeanette (Jeanette MacDonald). But when the truth is revealed, what will Courtelin do?
