    September Films: Bacall and Bogart

SEPT. 5 To Have & Have Not

    1944 NR 100 Minutes

This Howard Hawks classic starring Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart was scripted by the dynamic duo of William Faulkner and Jules Furthman from a novel by Ernest Hemingway. Bogart plays Harry Morgan, a charter boat owner who falls for a seductive petty thief, Marie Browning (Bacall). Walter Brennan portrays Harry's sidekick (Eddie). Hoagy Carmichael is the piano player and Bacall sings a couple of songs. This was Bacall's first film, she was nineteen years old. Bogart was 45— and they fell in love - for real.

    SEPT. 12 The Big Sleep

    1946 NR 114 minutes

A classic mystery from Raymond Chandler's first novel. A wealthy Los Angeles family, the Sternwoods, are being blackmailed; private-eye Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) is hired by Mr. Sternwood and ends up falling for his oldest daughter (Lauren Bacall). So convoluted even Chandler didn't know who committed one murder, but so incredibly entertaining that no one has ever cared. Howard Hawks directed, William Faulkner and Jules Furthman wrote the great script with its witty dialogue.

    SEPT. 19 Dark Passage

    1947 NR 106 minutes

Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart grace the screen in this classic 1947 thriller about a convict who escapes from San Quentin to hunt down his wife's true killer. To complete his mission, he must escape detection by the cops. So he undergoes plastic surgery and hides out in the home of a mysterious woman he's just met. The film uses a first-person point of view in its camera work, to put viewers into the shoes of the accused man. Agnes Moorehead also stars. Directed by Delmer Daves.

    SEPT. 26 Key Largo

    1948 NR 101 minutes

As a destructive hurricane wreaks havoc outside, Army veteran Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart), war-widow Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall) and her invalid father-in-law (Lionel Barrymore) face a worse storm inside their Florida hotel in Key Largo. Frank merely stopped by to pay his respects to Nora, only to find the hotel commandeered by exiled gangster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson). Claire Trevor won an Oscar as Rocco's boozy moll. John Huston wrote the script and directed.
