THOMASTON – The Thomaston Firecracker 5K was held about 30 minutes after the one mile Fun Run held for the kids and by the time it started the crowd was large, both in the race and on the sidelines cheering.

The day was perfect. Not too hot, no rain and the humidity was not bad at the start of the race, by the end, it was up quite a bit. But blue skies with a few clouds ruled the day making for a wonderful day for a run.

The race as it has been for many years was run on Beechwood St. staring at the front of the old Water Dog Tavern and they run up Beechwood to Brooks Trap Mill, turn around and finish where they started.

The race started with a good pace and was maintained by many with five runners posting times below 20 minutes. 154 people ran and or walked the race, down a little from last year when they had 182 runners.

Prizes were awarded to the winners in the following age divisions,
First Male, First Female, Overall Winners in the following age groups: 13 - 18, 19 - 29, 30 - 39, 40 - 49, 50 - 59, 60 plus.

This year 15 year old Caleb Richmond of Bedford NH won the race with a time of 18:50.65. Last year Richmond finished sixth with a time of 19:42.82, knocking almost a minute of his time.

The first female across the finish line was Jamie Greenwood, a 17 year old from Reading Mass.

The first local male and female to finish were 13 year old Elijah Allen of Jefferson and Kelsey Brooks of Cushing.

Will Daggert of Washington had maybe the biggest improvement over last year running a 19:22.80 this season and finishing third compared to last years 25th finish with a time of 22:09.42, almost three minutes improvement.

Darren Winchenbach finished fourth this year with a time of 19:27.42. The 33 year old finished 10th last year with a time of 20:04.29. Excellent improvement.

Overall the race is as well run as there is. Lynn Snow who volunteers runs the race and does an amazing job of making everything work without a hitch that anyone sees. Great volunteer staff all working together make for a very smooth race.
