KNOX - Tanya Lee Witherell Hubbard, 62, of Knox, died Sept. 23, 2016, at Maine General Medical Center after a long, feisty and courageous struggle with cancer. She was born in Lewiston on Oct. 5, 1953, to Philip and Avis Witherell.

She graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1971 and from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1975.  That fall she began a remarkable 37-year teaching career at Mount View High School.  An English teacher beloved by both students and staff, she was devoted to the Mount View family and inspired students to care about topics ranging from British literature to the Viet Nam War. After her retirement in 2012, she worked as a part-time literacy coach at the Waldo County Technical Center. Most importantly, she taught others to care and commit to making the world better for others.

In 1982, Tanya married Michael L. Hubbard of Thorndike, and together they had two children, Jason and Meghan, who were the center of her life. After 17 years of commitment, she and Jimmy Bartels of Knox were married in 2008.  He was a devoted husband who took wonderful care of her during their life together.

She will always be remembered for her remarkable generosity to family, friends and community, as well as for her irrepressible sense of humor and quick wit. More than anything else, she enjoyed her time with Jason, Meghan and Jim, and their Sunday lunches under the maple tree with the Witherells and Fortiers.

Tanya was predeceased by her brother, Kevin; and her mother, Avis. She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Bartels; her son, Jason M. Hubbard; her daughter, Meghan E. Hubbard; her father, Philip Witherell; and her brother, Brett Witherell, both of Monmouth.

At the request of the family, there will be no service.
