ROCKLAND, ME - May 15, 2015 — This summer, Steel House will offer two letterpress classes and two letterpress workshops taught by printmakers Richard Smith and Karin Spitfire. The press will also be available to artists who wish to pay a per-use fee or sign up for a monthly studio pass.

Smith and Spitfire will teach Intro to Letterpress on May 30 (9am-Noon) and again on July 25 (9am-Noon). This class will introduce participants to basic skills and safety information, including how to set and print a line of text.

Smith and Spitfire will also teach two intensive workshops this summer. A two-day introductory Letterpress Workshop will be offered on August 15-16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, which provides an in-depth overview of typesetting, linoblock images, and the printing process. The workshop will offer extensive hands-on time with the press and instruction on how to create and print linoblock plates for interested parties.

The August 1-3 (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Letterpress Book Intensive workshop will allow participants to create their own letterpress books, setting type and images, as well as learning finishing techniques for bookbinding. All workshops are limited to 6 participants in order to give each participant sufficient press time.
