Stuart W. Carle

CAMDEN — Stuart Walter Carle, 77, died May 13, 2015, from cancer at his home in Camden, attended by family. He was born in Camden on June 22, 1937, and was the son of Robert G. and Helen (Lang) Carle.

He lived in Rockport, next to the harbor, until 1943 when at the age of six moved with his parents and sister to Grafton, N.H., so his mother could care for her elderly mother. He attended elementary schools in Grafton and Canaan until February of 1952, when due to the death of his mother, his father moved the family back to Maine. Stuart graduated from Camden High School in 1955. He enlisted in the Air National Guard, based in Bangor.

For most of his adult life, Stuart drove trucks and heavy equipment, and was also a much sought after diesel and truck mechanic. In 1955, he married his first wife, Maxine Wellman of Palermo. They made their home in Hope and raised nine children. In 1997, he married Sylvia Faunce.

Stuart is survived by his wife, Sylvia Carle; and by the mother of his nine children, Maxine Carle. He is also survived by his elder sister, Evangeline Casqueiro of Mozambique; his younger brother, Robert Roy Carle of Hope, and his sister, Juanita Carle of Camden; his adult children and their spouses, Tammy Longfellow of Windsor; Pamela Longfellow of Farmingdale; Bryan Carle of Camden; Heidi Allred of California; Holly Underhill of Indonesia; Heather Carle of Liberty; Jamie Carle of Windsor; Joshua Carle of Rockport; and Bonny Longley of Hope; his stepchildren; Roland Faunce and Donna Fay Faunce, both of Stockton Springs; 28 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, May 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. There will be a funeral service held Monday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at Celebration Life Family Church, 3 Cross St. in Rockport. Burial will follow in Hope Grove Cemetery in Hope.
