BELFAST — Maine State Police have identified the third man accused of brandishing a handgun at a Winterport residence, impersonating law enforcement officers and making off with numerous mature marijuana plants, which were being grown for use by authorized medical marijuana patients, when verbally confronted by the homeowner.

Police have issued a warrant for 45-year-old Kerry Hurd of Bangor. Hurd is the younger brother of Jeffrey Hurd, 47, who turned himself into police Oct. 1 along with another man, 35-year-old Scott Roberts, wanted in connection with the crime. Jeffrey Hurd and Roberts are both from Glenburn, according to police. They walked into the lobby of the Waldo County Jail in Belfast around 9 p.m. that Wednesday night after learning they had been identified and warrants had been issued for their arrest.

The night the men turned themselves in, police said they knew the identity of the third man and an arrest warrant had been issued. Police are now seeking the public’s help in locating Kerry Hurd, who faces charges of robbery, theft and impersonating a police officer.

The robbery was caught on surveillance camera, and Jeffrey Hurd and Roberts’ faces were clearly visible. Kerry Hurd’s face was only partially visible, making it harder to identify him as the third suspect.

Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said tonight, Oct. 1, that the two men wanted for allegedly robbing a marijuana grower in Winterport turned themselves in.

“Jeff Hurd and Scott Roberts walked into the lobby of the Waldo County Jail in Belfast about 9 p.m. and surrendered,” said McCausland, in a news release. “They had been dropped off at the jail and are cooperating.  The third man involved in the robbery is now known and an arrest warrant for him will likely be issued this week.”

Maine State Police had issued arrest warrants for two of the three men accused of being involved last week in an armed robbery of medical marijuana plants from private property in Winterport.

Police Monday, Sept. 29, issued a press release seeking the public's help in identifying the three men they said entered the property wearing clothing impersonating law enforcement. One of the men was armed with what was believed to be a semi-automatic handgun, visible in the surveillance camera still photo.

More than three dozen tips from the public came after photos of the men’s faces, obtained by a surveillance camera at the property, were circulated and published by the media statewide. The incident took place Sept. 21 at around 7 a.m., according to police, who are not identifying the exact location.

Two of the men have been identified as Jeffrey Hurd, 47, and Scott Roberts, 35. Both are from Glenburn, and are considered armed and dangerous.

Trooper Elisha Fowlie, in the press release, said that a warrant has not been issued for the third man involved in the robbery. His face in the photo was not clear, and Fowlie did not indicate whether they know, suspect they know, or have tips about his identity.

The three men who entered the property wearing clothing impersonating law enforcement personnel, which is easily obtainable online, according to state Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. One of them, Roberts was dressed in black with a knit hat and a “SWAT" style vest. The other man, identified as Hurd, was wearing the shirt with “Sheriff” and an American flag patches and was the one seen on camera holding the gun.

During the incident, the home owner confronted the men verbally, and the three fled from the property with an armful of mature marijuana plants. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Police said both men weigh over 200 pounds, and Hurd is described as being 5-foot-6-inches tall, while Roberts is 5-foot-11-inches tall.

Both men are facing charges of robbery and impersonating a police officer.

Anyone with information about the identity of the third man, and/or the whereabouts of Hurd and Roberts is asked to call the State Police dispatch center in Augusta at 624-7076 and ask for either Trooper Elisha Fowlie or Trooper Sarah Ferland.
