ST. GEORGE — Sixth-graders at St. George School recently created a Welcome to Maine booklet for children of French-speaking newcomers to the state. The booklet is intended to help young immigrants get to know Maine.

Students at St. George School created the booklet in their French class with their teachers, Kit Harrison and Fanny Pouthier.

According to Harrison, students first brainstormed what they thought newcomers might like to learn about. Then each student created a page in French and in English about one of the topics. The topics included: the seasons, clothing for the seasons, the money system, favorite board games, colors, flags, animals, lobstering and much more. Each page also includes illustrations.

Catholic Charities, in Portland, will distribute the booklets to young French-speaking newcomers to Maine. The project was funded by the Perloff Family Foundation.
