In July last year, 28-year-old Jon Popham, a Machiasport lobstermen, died when he was pulled overboard after getting tangled in a line on board his lobster boat. Maine's fishing community promptly extended financial and emotional support to Popham's widow and 2-year-old son. The Maine Lobstermen's Community Alliance, a non-profit organization whose mission includes charitable support for distressed fishing families, did just a little bit more. In concert with Mary Coombs, manager of Cook's Lobster and Ale House on Bailey Island, the MLCA organized a fundraising dinner at the well-known restaurant last August, the proceeds of which support the organization's charitable giving fund.

This year Cook's Lobster and Ale House Lobstermen's Relief Fund Benefit will take place on August 13, from 3 to 7 p.m., and it promises to be fun for the entire family. The gala event begins at 3 p.m. with a Blessing of the Fleet ceremony officiated by Reverent Karen Lilli Pax. At 4 p.m., the popular blues-rock band Coastal Outlaws will liven up the crowd. Led by John Jordan, president of Calendar Islands Maine Lobster, the band and its special guests will play throughout the afternoon and evening. A silent auction will offer a selection of enticing items provided by local businesses, everything from meals at nearby restaurants to schooner voyages, art, and overnights at local inns.

Attendees will enjoy a superb meal of lobster, chicken or steak tips overlooking the water, and tickets to two complimentary beers provided by D.L. Geary Brewing Company. The company will be on site to introduce one of its signature summer brews at the event. Dessert will be the Coomb's family's mouth-watering blueberry cake.

Tickets for the Lobstermen's Relief Fund Benefit are $50 per person and include the meal, refreshments, and a complimentary beer glass from Geary's Brewing. Tickets may be purchased at www.eventbrite.com, or through the MLCA web site at http://mlcalliance.org/support/community-support.
