ROCKLAND — Ruth H. Spear, 91, died at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 12, 1920, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of Samuel and Hattie Carnes Wadsworth. As a young girl, Ruth lived in Vinalhaven, Thomaston and Cushing. She eventually moved to Rockland, where she attended local schools.

In 1932 Ruth married Edson N. Spear. Mr. Spear passed away in 1981.

She was a hard worker her entire life, and even after having polio as a child, which left her with the use of only one arm, Ruth continued to persevere. For many years she worked in local fish factories, specifically Green Island and Holmes Packing Company, where she ran the sealing machines. She has also worked washing dishes at a local restaurant.

As a young woman she enjoyed embroidery. Most recently, Ruth has enjoyed the company of her son and his wife. She took particular joy in spending time with and telling others about her granddaughter and great-granddaughter.

Predeceased by her husband; and her siblings, Kenneth and Charles Wadsowrth, Ethel Floyd and Lillian Barrett; she is survived by her son, Edson S. Spear and his wife, Patricia, of Friendship; one granddaughter, Victoria Harper and her husband, Jeffrey, of Thomaston; one great-granddaughter, Ariel Haper; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate.
