For Muriel

Rower’s Moon, a poem

    For  Muriel....

    Ah a Holy sport

are you headed to Alexandria port

with a cargo of wine and olives

    or just the rowers themselves

wanting to see what you see every day

    giving scholars reason to open

    their bodies, minds strength

I grew up here centuries ago

    reading and rowing

    I knew nothing of Homer

until Susan Connolly, a trained classicist

guided me with the Fagel’s translation

she was cruelly taken by the hated cancer

before she travelled to Greece and Italy

I like to think she is there now

    during the Golden Age

    perhaps the children you teach

will make it there, crying at the richness

    Susan’s quest

    perhaps meeting Helen

    First Among Women

    I must rest my mind

    I cannot write longer

just to say as you bless Rockland Harbor

you will be blessed by Olympus

and with the love of so many
